About Us

Energy is one of the important inputs for development of any nation. Energy is decisive for development and constitutes the engine of socio-economic development. However the reality is that more than 1.3 billion people in the world lack access to electricity and atleast 2.7 billion people are without clean cooking facilities.

While supporting around 16% of the world population, India's share in world energy use is low at only 4.2%. India has a grid connected power generation installed capacity of around 250 GW which is third in terms of installed capacity in the world. However, the per capita annual electricity consumption is around 800 kwh which is less than a third of the world average. According to the National Census 2011, around 78 million or 31% Indian households, primarily from rural areas (73 million households from rural areas) use kerosene to meet the lighting energy requirement and around 173 million households are using either traditional biomass or coal/charcoal or kerosene for cooking.

India’s renewable energy installed capacity has grown from 3.9 GW in 2002-03 to about 36.55 GW in March 2015. Wind Energy has been the predominant contributor to this growth (23.45 GW) followed by biomass power (5.03 GW), small hydro power (4.06 GW), and solar power (3.99 GW). Renewable energy can supplement the use of conventional fuel and help in developing the nation. Affordable and Sustainable Energy for all people is critical to the development of any country and yet it remains a major challenge. Investing in clean, efficient, affordable, accessible and reliable energy is indispensable for a prosperous, environmentally sustainable future.

In the above backdrop, we at VIKALP have created Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development (CRESD). The prime objective of CRESD is dissemination of knowledge and sensitization of people on utilization and access to renewable sources of energy and preservation of environment, to promote and deploy renewable energy technologies in rural and urban areas, building cross sectoral linkages and working in collaboration with various stake holders on issues related to renewable energy and promote initiatives that foster sustainable development.
